Redistricting of U.S. House of Representatives Districts

Redistricing map versus current map.png

The South Carolina Legislature was called back into a special session by our governor, Henry McMaster, to vote on a new map to redistrict the U.S. House of Representatives.  This redistricting was at the request of the White House to make 7 new districts that would be expected to vote for republicans.  Typically, redistricting occurs every 10 years after a new census provides updated data.  The current map was created for the 2022-2030 election cycle and took over two years to complete.  If the new map is passed, another election will need to be held in August for the 7 new congressional districts.  The House has approved the new map.  The Senate will meet on Tuesday, May 26 for final debates and voting.

Issues with the proposed map:

  • The proposed map was not draw by anyone in South Carolina and no one knows what data was used to make it.

  • The typical process involves drawing maps, data gathering, and public input prior to voting.  That process is being short-changed to serve the request of the White House, but it does not serve the people of South Carolina.

  • The proposed map will split precincts making voting confusing with no time or money to send out updated information to voters.

  • The cost is estimated to be around $6 million for the State Election Commission.  Each county will also have to pay for a second election in August.

  • All congressional candidates will have to refile between June 1 and June 5.

  • Lawsuits are expected if the map is passed which will incur even more costs.

  • Early voting and absentee ballots will be cast PRIOR to final voting on redistricting.
